OUR STORY

The George Inn has been a feature of Oakham’s historic marketplace since the late 16th century. Although renamed in 1987 to The Whipper-In, it is the original character that has prevailed for over five centuries.

In August 2022, we purchased the Whipper-In with a vision to lovingly restore the hotel to its former glory under its original ‘George’ name.

The story so far

The Whipper-In has now retired and The George Inn, Oakham will continue to evolve over time through several phases. We invite you to join us on our journey…

LOOKING BACK

This beautiful example of a rural coaching inn has offered respite for weary travellers and has been a central hub for the local community.

It has played its part in important business meetings, the serving of legal notices, announcement of election results and as a gathering place for local business owners.

We bought The George Inn because we firmly believed that with sensitive care, this important piece of history could once again flourish and with each new chapter the hotel will reaffirm its place in the heart of our Rutland community.

HERE & NOW

So far, the hotel has undergone an initial phase which has seen new, sumptuous decor throughout, including: refurbishing some of our 20 bedrooms; the new George Bar; the Parlour and Dining Room; the Snug; updates to the reception, garden and our new boutique cinema is now open to hotel guests and the public.

A variety of new menus have been launched together with themed supper evenings which can be found on our food and drink page.

The ‘Rutland Room’ has been fully restored to provide an extremely opulent setting for a private dinner, conference or meeting and can seat up to 30 guests around an extremely large table.
